Samsung victorious at Supreme Court fight with 8-0 opinion against Apple

For the first time in a century, the US Supreme Court has weighed in on how much design patents are worth. The answer: not nearly as much as Apple thinks.

The 8-0 opinion (PDF) is a rebuke to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which held that the relevant “article of manufacture” for calculating damages was—in fact, had to be—the entire smartphone. That meant even though Apple’s patents covered only certain design elements, it was entitled to $399 million in lost profits damages.

Users won’t be able to disable Magazine UX, the Samsung UI that “dismayed” Google

Magazine UX will be a fixture of the user experience on the new TabPRO and NotePRO tablets, as users won’t be able to disable it.

Samsung announced yesterday that the NotePRO 12.2, TabPRO 8.4, and TabPRO 10.1 will start shipping in the United States on February 13, with the TabPRO 12.2 to follow sometime in March. One of the core software features of these new devices is Magazine UX, a tile-based homescreen replacement that serves info such as weather, news, and social updates in widgets that users can configure and resize. Some compare Magazine UX with Windows Phone’s UI, but the truth is tiles are a growing trend in UI design, making appearances in HTC’s BlinkFeed, the feed aggregator Flipboard, and other apps.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs Apple iPad Mini

The rivalry between Samsung and Apple has reached an unprecedented level over the past year, but while Samsung seems to have found the perfect recipe for the smartphone market, the Galaxy Tab line was not nearly as successful in taking on the Apple iPad.

More recently, Samsung has been making efforts to push the Galaxy Note in the tablet space. A first step was the introduction of the Galaxy Note 10.1, a high-end device that was received mixed reviews, the major drawbacks being its steep price and mediocre display. The next step is the Galaxy Note 8.0, a tablet that the South Korean manufacturer has recently officially announced.

Rumor: Galaxy Note 10.1 to come with new Mali T-604 GPU? Could it crush the iPad?

Although it was officially unveiled way back in February at the MWC, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet hasn’t yet seen the light of day. Initially set to enjoy a June worldwide release, the 10-incher was recently pushed back to a yet to be specified launch date.

If you remember, we told you about a month ago that we’re suspecting the delayed launch to be caused by one or several technical changes Samsung is planning to make to the Note 10.1 we saw in February. Now, this suspicion seems to gain confirmation, as the guys at nordichardware.com are reporting to have caught a glimpse of a Galaxy Note 10.1 with a couple of very significant alterations.

Must have moar tablets, says Samsung. Two brand new tabs coming?

Just when we thought that Samsung has exhausted its tablet quota for the year, the company is now rumored to be bringing out a couple of unheard of Android tablets into the market as early as June. The source of the rumor was an internal document coming all the way from la France that outlines the Korean company’s Smart TV line, with some side information that details the compatibility of the Smart View app for Samsung’s phones and tablets.

As you can see on the diagram, there are two new Samsung tablet models listed there, the Espresso 10 and Espresso 7, along with their expected release date. The Samsung Espresso 10 apparently will come out in June, while the Espresso 7’s release date status is still TBC. There’s no other information given except that the two Espresso tablets will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
